Blueprint London is a packaging design agency. I chose blueprint because I felt that I needed to improve my attention to detail. I got exactly that at Blueprint. Working within micro-millimetres every incremental change makes a difference. I really enjoyed working with small margins, I got to a point where just by looking at an item I could identify the measurements. Design lead Christina Capallaro was a great person to learn from, her enthusiasm for packaging design helped me improve my skills as well as set my own targets to achieve. We had exclusive rights to Warner Brothers, LEGO projects, so I was constantly working on high value projects which was great fun.

The ones I can talk about
Detroit become human
My Role
This was a really fun experience. We were given the opportunity to win the rights to design the packaging. However we were guaranteed to be part of the manufacturing process. Christina allowed me to assist her with the outer packaging (box) whilst she gave me full reigns on the sleeve for the disk case.
Since the game is based around artificial humans (robots) I took the opprtunity to include the language of the computer…Binary. Using themes in the game, the circle on the temple you see and a triangular building I used the ‘0’ as an ‘O’ and ‘1’ as the triangle. Using binary I spelled out ‘Detroit’. Seemed like a cool Easter egg for any keen players. The entire project was really fun and a great learning experience.
LEGO
My Role
I’d love to say I worked on this exact piece but I didn’t. A lot of the work from LEGO was making simple pieces of packaging just like this. We received a lot of work every week from LEGO so it did become quite an easy task to whip up one of these. Using Artios and the in-house plotter we would use the packaging they would send to either create a new box if required or send a pre-existing template that it fit into.
Game Of Thrones - Shadow Box
My Role
This was an interesting one. We weren’t really told what we were working on until they told us what goes on the box. We worked alongside a team in America which is always fun because we get to convert their measurements. I gained a lot of experience in terms of communication with this role. Christina was on annual leave when this project came around and I wanted to make sure no one outside the company new she was away. I worked longer hours to make sure that all prototypes were delivered on time for every project including this one. The team around me were extremely helpful and gave me advice and information at every milestone.
Disk packaging - generic
My Role
I didn’t work on the Star Wars project but the packaging is pretty much on the mark. We would receive requests to build packaging for games, DVD bundles, movie bundles and even music bundles. They came in all sizes but looked quite similar to this. Depending on the type of case the closing mechanism may change.
I would say that working on such projects has intrigued me. To this day when I open a box, I like to see what type of closing style they used because it can tell you what types of challenges they may have faced.
